The other day I watched "To Catch a Thief"

Soon to be

Here's an idea I had about three weeks ago for something to put on my right forearm - running from the inside of the elbow pointing to the hand, just a reminder to myself about what my priorities should be.

And here's the final art I came up with after spending a few hours yesterday cleaning things up.

Now it's just a matter of waiting until my money is right.

Wolter Wierbos, solo live at Little City

Amazing, as usual for Epistrophy shows. Little City is tiny - I'd say the audience was only about 50 people, but you could still almost say the place was packed. Wierbos played a mindblowing solo set to start. The guy can make a trombone do or sound like anything - just an unbelievable bag of tricks including (but not limited to) circle breathing, bird calls, digeridu-type drones and overtones, the usual collection of slide and mute wah and smear manuevers, insanely fast runs, stuff that sounded like those crazy buddhist throat-singing monks and mongolians, quick series of staccato blats that you'd swear were a percussion instrument...good gravy, I can't even remember all the stuff he did, but it was absolutely enthralling. Then, after what I'm guessing was a long (half hour-forty minutes maybe) free solo improv, he took a break and came back for the trio part of the show. Alex Coke was amazing, too, as usual, switching up between tenor sax, piccolo, and alto flute. After the show he told me that he switched away from the alto because he was concerned people like me in the back wouldn't be able to hear it, but it was clear as a bell for me. Cogburn I hadn't heard before, but someone else said he sounded a bit like Sunny Murray, and I'd have to agree - free jazz nerds know this is a very good thing indeed.

Coming up in April - Peter Brotzmann and Han Bennink! Pedro mentioned the venue, but I can't remember now. Right around taxtime, too.

Edit - I am informed in comments that the Brotzmann/Bennink concert will be April 26 at the Victory Grill on East 11th. This is a lineup that will drink your milkshake, so make it a point of pride to be there. These guys didn't get to be legends by accident, you know.
